Honouring Charlie Lea

Throughout this month we are honouring and celebrating Black History month. Today we take a look back at shrimps legend Charlie Lea.

“Cha-cha-cha-cha Charlie Lea, the best footballer you’ll ever see’. This was the chant from the terraces for Charlie Lea, Morecambe FC’s first black player.

We would like to honour Charlie as part of Black History Month.

Charlie signed from Preston in 1966 and made nearly 300 appearances for the Shrimps. Charlie was an integral part of the Lancashire Combination League winning sides in 1966-67 and 1967-68. This famously included beating Burnley 2-1 in the Lancashire Senior Cup Final.

Charlie played his last game for Morecambe on the 13th of January 1973.

On the day of Charlie’s funeral, the whole first team squad left the training ground and lined up on Broadway to pay their respects to this Shrimp’s legend.
