GIRLS CUP A HUGE SUCCESS

The community team was busy at work on Tuesday 21st November, hosting the EFL Utilita Girls Cup under 13’s competition. This event takes place annually for girls in years 7 and 8 to take part for their High School. The team that wins the competition has the opportunity of representing Morecambe Football Club in the next round.

This year we were thrilled to have six local high schools participate in the event. There was a total of ten teams that entered. We had Ripley St Thomas, Central Lancaster High, Our Lady’s Catholic College, Carnforth High, Bay Leadership Academy and Morecambe Bay Academy. The teams were split into 2 groups with every team playing each other once, with the top two advancing into the semi-finals.

We were treated to some good football from all teams and the competition was strong. However, it was last years’ winners Ripley St Thomas and Bay Leadership Academy who made it to the final. Morecambe FC first team players, Aaron Wildig and Jon Obika, made the trip to Mossgate to see how the teams were getting on. In addition, they also made the time to have pictures with the girls and join them in celebrating their success.

The Final

This year the final of our Girls Cup was played on the same day as the group stage. Therefore Ripley St Thomas and Bay Leadership Academy had a short break and a team talk before getting their final game underway. Their was some real quality from the girls in both teams. In the end, it was Ripley St Thomas who secured a 3-1 win to make it into the next round of the competition against other winning teams at Preston North End.

During half time of Morecambe’s home game against MK Dons both teams went onto the pitch to receive their special pennants and have a group picture in recognition of all their hard work. We would like to give our thanks to the girls who took part in the EFL Utilita Girls Cup this year, and also all the teachers that put in the effort coaching their teams.
